Barack Obama today pledged "a automobile insurance from Washington" to aid America's
mayors through the economic downturn, telling a contingent of
municipal leaders they bear front-line responsibility for getting the
American economy moving again.
At the White House today, the president told a group of more than 80
mayors from both parties that they know far better than federal
bureaucrats and politicians in Washington which projects will best
stimulate economic growth and create jobs in their communities.
"Rebuilding our economies and renewing our cities is going to require
a true partnership between mayors and the White House, and that
partnership has to begin right now," Obama said.
Obama and vice-president Joseph Biden said they are keenly aware of
what happens to America's cities when the economy turns sour:
municipal customized playing cards shrink, streets become dangerous and schools
overcrowded. Obama noted that unlike the federal government, cities
cannot spend on a deficit, forcing them to make dire cuts in spending
or raise taxes.
"You know what happens when folks get laid off, or they lose their
homes or their health care, and they turn to the mayor's office for
help," the president said. "And just as your services stretch, your
classrooms get crowded, and cheap insurance streets grow less safe, your budgets
shrink. You can't deficit spend, so you face impossible choices:
raising taxes; cutting essential services; laying off teachers,
firefighters, police officers."
The $787bn rescue plan, signed by the president this week, contains
billions of dollars to streetwear fashion up municipal budgets across the country,
in the form of education, transportation, welfare and healthcare
dollars to be ultimately spent by mayors and city councils. Obama
hopes that cities will quickly spend the money, and hopes the package
overall will save or create more than 3m jobs.
Obama spent about three years as a community organiser in the gritty
south side of chinese teacher chicago before heading to law school, and compared the
role to that of mayors.
Approximately 80% of Americans live in metropolitan areas, including
suburbs, a figure roughly on par with the UK.
"Rebuilding our economies and renewing our cities is going to require
a true partnership between mayors and the White House, and that
partnership has to begin right now," Obama said.
As part of the new urban orientation of the White House, Obama
yesterday established a new White House office of urban affairs led by
Bronx, New York borough president Adolfo Carrion. The office will
coordinate federal urban policy and ensure federal tax dollars
directed at cities independent fashion spent effectively.
From the podium in the East Room of the White House, Obama recognised
the two "hometown" mayors â Richard Daley of Chicago imprinted playing cards Mufi
Hannemann of Honolulu. Obama also knows surfboard shape playing cards whole life insurance the others from his
